Learning Style Assessment

Knowing
your child's learning style is a foundational step
in choosing both a curriculum and teaching
approach. This important information can help you
choose a curriculum that teaches to your child's
strengths, saving you money and
heartache.
Knowing your
child's learning style better enables you to loosen the grip of
any residual public school
indoctrination you might unconsciously be
carrying. This can grant you real freedom to begin to
think outside the box concerning educational resources
and teaching methods.
Accommodating
your children’s learning styles isn't a matter
of indulgence or "pampering."
Allowing a kinesthetic/visual child for
instance, to learn his math through playing board games and
computer software (instead of through a textbook),
isn't just a more entertaining way for him to
learn. It provides him the optimal learning experience
based on his particular strengths. The
ability to teach in this way is one of the reasons
home education is both a very effective and
enjoyable educational option.
"A
wise teacher makes learning a joy." (Proverbs
15:2 NLT)
Home based
learning is not just about lesson plans and textbooks.
It's about providing your child with his most favorable
learning experiences. (see
Ephesians
6:4)

One of our favorite books on learning styles is, "Discover Your Child's Learning
Style" by Mariaemma Willis and Victoria
Kindle-Hodson. The authors'
methods take into account a child's talents, interests,
learning environment, and temperament, as well as the more
familiar aspects of learning styles. They write, "The
purpose of this book is to provide tools to help you keep
that eagerness and ability to learn alive in your child."
We have found that this book is an excellent tool for
parents. We purchased two copies for our school library.
You can try obtaining a copy through your city or county
library. The information below might help you if you
need to ask for an Interlibrary loan of the book. You can
also
read
an article written by the authors for a better
understanding of their assessment methods.
